With the COVID-19 pandemic limiting the number of matches played in 2020 — and subsequently putting paid to the usual Team of the Year awards — the ICC announced a special edition of its annual awards ceremony, instead recognising the standout international performers of the past 10 years.
Judges assessed players’ performances from January 1, 2011 to October 7, 2020 when selecting the teams. Players needed to have played international cricket in the relevant formats for at least five years.

Kohli was named in the ICC men’s Test, ODI and T20I teams of the decade. He was the only man named in all three teams and was skipper of the Test XI, while fellow Indian MS Dhoni was named captain of both the ODI and T20 sides.
Opening batsman David Warner was the only Australian male to feature in two teams, named as an opening batsman in the Test and ODI teams of the decade.
Steve Smith (Test), Mitchell Starc (ODI), Aaron Finch (T20I) and Glenn Maxwell (T20I) were the other four players that featured.
The two women’s teams had a strong Australian presence, with star trio Alyssa Healy, Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry named in both the ICC women’s ODI and T20I teams of the decade, with Lanning skipper of the two sides. Spearhead Megan Schutt was also included in the T20I side.
Rohit Sharma, AB de Villiers and Lasith Malinga made the ODI and T20I teams, while England all-rounder Ben Stokes featured in the Test and ODI sides. Stokes was one of four England representatives in the Test side along with Alastair Cook, Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson.
India’s Ravichandran Ashwin was named as the Test team’s No. 1 spinner, pipping Australia’s Nathan Lyon despite the latter taking more wickets across the decade. However Ashwin has played less Tests but has a better average, strike rate and economy rate while he’s taken more five and 10-wicket hauls.
In a mini surprise, Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara was named the Test wicketkeeper of the decade, despite barely standing behind the stumps in Tests from 2011 to the end of his Test career in 2015. He pipped the likes of South Africa’s Quinton de Kock and New Zealand’s BJ Watling, while Aussie Brad Haddin and England’s Jonny Bairstow would’ve also been in the mix.
