Tasmanian Opposition Leader Rebecca White has announced she will not re-contest the Labor leadership.

She said she had decided to stand down as leader following a week of conversations about the future of the party with key figures, including shadow treasurer David O'Byrne.

Ms White, who has led the party to two election losses since she took over the leadership in 2017, had previously signalled her intention to stay on as leader following the party's May 1 election loss.

Mr O’Byrne is widely expected to ascend to the leadership; Rebecca White has endorsed him to replace her.

Party members will meet on Monday to discuss it.
