There have recently been rumors of AirPods 3 being about to be revealed, alongside Apple Music offering lossless music. Well, the rumors were half right.
Apple has announced lossless song options are coming to Apple Music in an upgrade available from next month. But there’s been no mention of Apple AirPods 3. I have to say I’m not entirely surprised. After such a big hardware announcement last month, I suspect there’ll be a pause before the next release.
More than 75 million tracks (that’s the entire Apple Music catalog) will be available in lossless audio, oh, and there’s no extra cost for Apple Music subscribers.
Additionally, there will be support for Spatial Audio music for songs created in Dolby Atmos. If you’ve watched videos or movies on an iPad and listened through AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, you’ll know that compatible content sounds sensational.
Spatial Audio is being introduced for thousands of Dolby Atmos songs in June, with more to follow, including curated playlists and special badges on appropriate albums to make them easy to find.
To choose whether to listen at lossless quality, go to Settings, then Music, then Audio Quality. It’s not there yet, but there will be a place to choose audio resolution levels, which you can set according to whether you’re on cellular connection, or wi-fi or for download. After all, lossless files are bigger so streaming or downloading them will need your permission.
Spatial Audio playback will be available in several situations. Apple explains: “By default, Apple Music will automatically play Dolby Atmos tracks on all AirPods and Beats headphones with an H1 or W1 chip, as well as the built-in speakers in the latest versions of iPhone, iPad, and Mac.”
That’s more than just the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max as it is just now. Apple hasn’t said when the new options will be available beyond June, but it’s widely expected that iOS 14.6 is most likely required.
