“It’s a very sad day for the Fulton family and rugby league generally,” Hadley said.

“I’ve announced some sad things on radio but this could be the saddest. I’m going to miss him, he was a great man. The most loyal friend I’ve ever had. He will be sadly missed.”

The legendary Manly, NSW and Australian representative is survived by wife Anne, sons Scott, Brett and daughter Kristie.

David Morrow, a member of the team at Continuous Call, where Fulton used to work, became emotional as he spoke about his friend on-air on Sunday afternoon.

“I’m blown away because he’s been a big part of me ever since I came to Sydney in 1980 as a broadcaster,” Morrow said. “There are some players that owe their careers to him. It is like a dagger in the heart.”

Better known as “Bozo”, Fulton joined Manly in 1966 aged 18 and won premierships with the club in 1972 and 1973 before captaining the Sea Eagles to a third title in 1976, in his last game for the club.
