The death toll from the Miami building collapse has risen to nine as search and rescue efforts continue.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said one victim had died in hospital, while workers had pulled more bodies from the wreckage of the building in the US state of Florida.

"We were able to recover four additional bodies in the rubble as well additional human remains," Ms Cava said.

"As of today, one victim passed away in the hospital, and we've recovered eight … victims on site. So, I am confirming today that the death toll is at nine. We've identified four of the victims and notified the next of kin."

Rescue workers remained on the massive pile of rubble as the search to find survivors continued with more than 150 people still unaccounted for.

The search has been painstakingly slow, hampered in the early days by a fire burning deep in the debris that officials now believe is under control.

Officials have stressed that there may yet be survivors buried in the rubble.

Ms Cava said that teams had cut a "deep trench" through the pile of twisted debris to assist in the search.

"It's now 125 feet (38 metres) in length into the pile, it's 20 feet (6m) wide and 40 feet (12m) deep," she said, adding that it was "critical" to the search process, and that it was as a result of the trench that the additional bodies were recovered.

More to come.
