A generous donor has given thousands of dollars worth of new clothing to a charitable organisation following lockdowns destroying plans to open a retail shop.

The clothing – originally purchased for a new retail store in Adelaide — has been donated to the Australian Red Cross.

A storage room at the Red Cross Mount Gambier centre is now overflowing with dozens of boxes of clothes for women, men and children.

It is estimated the clothes are worth about $20,000.

Red Cross Limestone Coast regional manager David Walshaw described the philanthropic donation as an "amazing" gesture and a silver lining from the pandemic.

"We came across a very generous donor who contacted us," he said.

"She purchased a significant amount of money's worth of clothing for stock.

Clothing to help 'vulnerable'

Mr Walshaw said the clothing — a mix of summer and winter clothing — would initially be given to newly arrived migrants and the leftover stock would be sold at bargain prices.

"Proceeds will go back into program delivery and other Red Cross initiatives in the South East of SA.

"All the money will directly go back into community to provide for the most vulnerable."

Mr Walshaw said support for Red Cross remained strong across the regional community.

"Through our own internal messaging, and Facebook and social media posts, people have seen these initiatives," he said.

Community generous support

Mr Walshaw said the organisation also recently received a $10,000 from a person from the small rural community of Bordertown.

"They made a very generous donation that will go towards many initiatives.
