Rising Fremantle star Adam Cerra has requested a trade back to Victoria.

Foxfooty.com.au understands that Carlton is his preferred destination, that have long been linked to the out-of-contract midfielder.

It ends months of speculation surrounding the 21-year old’s future, having had two to four-year contract options worth $750,000 per season tabled to him by the Dockers for the majority of the season

But the former Pick 5’s decision to move back to Victoria is for family reasons, with the Blues in the box seat despite their uncertain coaching situation muddying the waters.

Foxfooty.com.aufirst revealed a fortnight ago that Cerra had narrowed down his decision to two clubs: Carlton and Fremantle.

Dockers football boss Peter Bell on Tuesday afternoon confirmed Cerra had handed in a trade request.

“Since his arrival in 2017, Adam Cerra has been everything we hoped we would get from a number five selection in the draft, which only highlights our disappointment in his decision,” he said.

“Our disappointment comes with the understanding that Adam is making this request purely based on his desire to be closer to his family and friends, something that has been especially difficult for our interstate players in the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Since 2017, we have invested a lot into Adam both on and off the field, and we are proud of the person he is and the footballer he is.

“It’s easy to forget that he is only 21, with many years ahead until he reaches the peak of his abilities.”

Cerra enjoyed a career-best 2021 season – averaging 23.1 disposals, 5.2 marks, 3.6 clearances and five clearances from 18 games – flourishing in a pure on-ball role under Justin Longmuir.

As he doesn’t yet qualify for free agency, Cerra would need to be acquired via trade.

Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph told Fox Sports News’ AFL Tonight on Monday that the Blues’ first-rounder – currently the No. 6 selection – would be the central point to any deal.

“You’d think that Pick 6, which will become Pick 8 on draft night, is absolutely the least option that they need to give up. (They’ll) Potentially need to give up a second pick later on as a late first-rounder or even an early second-rounder as well,” he said.

Cerra has played 76 AFL games since making his debut in 2018.
