Xbox fans were baffled yesterday when Microsoft chose to not feature Halo Infinite at all during its much-anticipated showcase. Everyone was split whether a release date for Halo Infinite would be announced at a different moment in Gamescom, or if yet another delay was coming.
Turns out it appears to be the former. This morning, Aggiornamenti Lumia spotted a listing on the Microsoft store that the game is coming out on December 8, 2021. This has been confirmed as correct by The Verge’s Tom Warren, who seems to be in the know.
That is pretty late into the holiday season, and a little strange considering the back half of November is completely open with no other major game release, but that’s the date they’ve chosen. And oddly, it’s on a Wednesday, for whatever reason.
Last week, Microsoft disappointed fans by revealing the game would not launch with campaign co-op or Forge mode, but 343 stuck to saying it would be out this holiday. And that does appear to be the case. This date also allows us to estimate when co-op and Forge are coming. Co-op is supposed to be in season 2 of the game, three months or so later, so that would be March 2022. And Forge in the season after that, so June 2022. Again, some fans were pushing for another delay so the game could launch “complete,” but it’s clear Microsoft did not want to delay it out of the holiday window again.
When is this release date going to be official? The theory is that Halo Infinite may be showing up at Geoff Keighley’s Opening Night Live later this afternoon, which begins at 2 PM ET. Hence why the release date may have gone online early.
What state Halo Infinite launches in is anyone’s guess at this point. The Multiplayer Technical Flight was a big success, and everyone came away with positive impressions there. But rumblings seem to indicate the campaign aspect may not be going as smoothly, hence why we’re not seeing co-op for some time. Regardless, 343 has made it clear that Halo Infinite is a “platform” for Halo content going forward, and it was always the plan to release more and more content for the game as time went on, past the initial offerings here.
We will see if Microsoft confirms this early, or if they’re waiting until Opening Night Live or another showcase. It was probably the right call to just close their own showcase with this yesterday to avoid all this confusion, but here we are.
