International supply chain issues are not the only network problems facing Australia Post, with the business also fighting to keep its operations running smoothly amid the ongoing Delta outbreaks across the country.
Mr Boys said at any one time, the business has around 500 employees isolated due to outbreaks at various exposure sites in Sydney and Melbourne, which was putting further strain on a network that is already processing record parcel volumes.
“When normally we would have 5000 people extra to deal with Christmas volumes, we’re instead 500 people short,” he said. “Delta is having a significantly greater impact this year than last year.”
Australia Post has had a tumultuous year, from a governance point of view as well, after its former boss Christine Holgate departed following revelations she spent $20,000 on luxury watches for executives. Earlier this month, Ms Holgate secured a $1 million termination payout, though Australia Post did not admit to any wrongdoing.
Mr Boys said the organisation was happy to put the issues of the past 12 months behind it, noting it made “our jobs a little easier” in that the executive team could now fully focus on running the postal service. Corporate costs decreased 1.5 per cent, or $16.8 million, for the year.
