Aussie shoppers are in for a shock, with a massive change launching in Kmart stores around the country from today.

A major change has arrived at Kmart, with stores across the country accepting in-store Afterpay from today.

For the past three years, Kmart has offered Afterpay to its online customers only.

But on Monday, the retail giant confirmed the buy now, pay later service had commenced operations in 322 Kmart and K Hub stores across Australia.

“The news has arrived just in time as restrictions ease and in the lead up to Christmas, signifying the mark of a brighter future for retail,” a spokeswoman for Kmart said.

“Christmas shopping can be incredibly stressful and following on from another troublesome year, the Kmart and Afterpay offering in-store will provide budgeting relief to many families and individuals.”

Afterpay was founded in 2014 by Australian duo Nick Molnar and Anthony Eisen. The company has since grown into one of the largest and most successful enterprises in the country.

Afterpay Australia Manager Katrina Konstas said the announcement was a much-anticipated development for many Kmart and Afterpay enthusiasts.

“We know how much our customers love shopping at Kmart and we have heard you, we are absolutely delighted to be able to offer this seven weeks out from Christmas,” Ms Konstas said.

Kmart General Manager Chris Renshaw said the in-store availability of the popular pay later service would soon extend to Australia’s kiwi neighbours as well.

“We look forward to expanding this offering into New Zealand early next year,” Mr Renshaw said.
