Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson has had its bid for an appeal to a Federal Court ruling thrown out of the High Court.

Last year, Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries were ordered to pay $2.6 million in damages to three women who had suffered serious side effects from faulty mesh implants.

The women, Kathryn Gill, Diane Dawson and Ann Sanders, were the lead applicants in a class action of thousands of women who had experienced side effects from the implants, including chronic pain and infection.

The devices, also known as transvaginal mesh, were implanted into the pelvis for conditions that included pelvis organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence.

Earlier this year, the Federal Court found the Johnson & Johnson had been driven by commercial interests and there were no warnings about the side effects from the mesh implants.

Today, the High Court denied the company's leave application for a hearing, saying there was no point of law in the case to be challenged and it would not have any prospect of success.

More to come.
