Former Liverpool and England striker Daniel Sturridge had a late cameo in his debut for Perth Glory as his new club drew 1-1 with Adelaide United.

In front of a crowd of more than 17,000, Sturridge had 10 minutes at the end to try and snatch victory for the home side.

The match was played at a high pace from the start and had plenty of talking points, with both teams being disallowed goals in the second half.

But Sturridge was the star of the night and said he felt good after his first match in the A-League Men.

"It felt great. Obviously, the game was close and they played very well. Unfortunately, we didn't get the win," he said.

The 32-year-old, who won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2009-10 before spending seven seasons with Liverpool, was not expected to play many minutes, having recently come out of a mandatory two-week quarantine.

He said he knew the game would be a challenge but expects to improve as the season progresses.

"It's not easy to go from being in a room for two weeks straight to playing professional football matches," he said.

Adelaide started the best of the sides, looking lively in attack and swarming the Glory half.

The away team had plenty of chances early as it tried to open the scoring.

The Reds finally got their goal when Ben Halloran muscled Glory defender Kosuke Ota off the ball outside the box and played a pass in for Kusini Yengi, who made no mistake.

Adelaide could have had three goals in the first half but could not capitalise on its opportunities.

The Reds were made to pay for in the 39th minute when Glory striker Bruno Fornaroli took a ball from midfield and took a few touches before fining a thunderbolt from outside the box past former Socceroos keeper Brad Jones.

The rocket sent the sides into the sheds level, with Perth showing glimpses of dominance in the latter stages of the first half.

United thought it had retaken the lead just four minutes into the second half the ball was slotted into the back of the net from close range.

But the referee called a foul for the contest which preceded the goal.

Glory then had its own brief moment when they thought it had a second goal, Antonee Burke-Gilroy stormed into the box and slotted his strike into the back of the United net.

The goal stood more than a minute before the referee got a call from the VAR before the restart, informing him Fornaroli was offside in the build-up.

Both teams threatened to score in the final 20 minutes as the game opened up, but neither side could find the match-winning goal.

Sturridge brought the crowd to life every time he touched the ball in the dying minutes but was neutralised by the United defence.
