New border restrictions for international travellers entering Victoria began at 11.59pm on Saturday, after the World Health Organisation declared the Omicron strain of COVID-19 a ‘variant of concern’.

While little is known about the variant’s capacity to cause serious illness or death, Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said Omicron is likely to be “very transmissible”, already becoming the predominant variant in South Africa.
