Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has stunned cricket fans in a sensational Test debut which saw him score a century and a half-century against New Zealand.

Iyer made 105 in his first innings before a gritty 65 on a wearing pitch in the second innings, becoming the first Indian Test debutant to score a century and half-century on debut.

The right-hander also became the first Indian to make two scores of 50-plus on Test debut since Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar in 1971 against the West Indies.

Iyer was able to find a spot in the Indian XI for the opening Test due to the likes of skipper Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant being rested, but appears a near certainty to play in the second Test, even with Kohli returning.

While it was his Test debut against the Black Caps, Iyer is certainly no stranger to cricket fans, having appeared frequently in both the ODI and T20 line-ups for India since 2017.

The Mumbai native has impressive ODI numbers, having hit 813 runs in 22 matches at an average of 42.78 and a strike-rate of 100.37.

Three of those matches came during India's tour of Australia last summer, where he featured in both India's ODI and T20 teams before sitting out the Test series.

The 26-year-old's exploits on debut caught the attention of a number of former players, including former superstar batter VVS Laxman.
