WA’s active COVID case load has expanded by more than two dozen infections, the Premier has revealed, as the State prepares to welcome 6,000 interstate travellers on the first day of eased border restrictions.

Twenty-five new local cases were recorded overnight, Mark McGowan said.

Of those, 21 have been linked to current outbreaks. The source of the remaining four infections are under investigation.

Some 7684 tests were undertaken in the past 24 hours.

It comes as the Premier revealed he expects up to 6000 interstate travellers to arrive in WA on Saturday, after some border restrictions were eased.

Until January 20, the Government had hoped to open WA on February 5 with little restrictions.

However that was cancelled due to the outbreak of the Omicron variant.

“Under our new plan, thousands of Western Australians will safely reunite with loved ones with around 17,000 already approved to arrive and quarantine over the coming week,” he said.

“As always we continue to review our COVID settings and border controls.”

Perth Airport on Friday estimates around 6000 interstate passengers will touch down on Saturday and another 4500 on Sunday. They will then spend two weeks in home quarantine.

Only 86 international arrivals are due to land in Perth over the weekend. They must serve the first week in hotel quarantine and the second week in isolation at home.

The travellers are the first wave of WA residents to be given the green light by police to return under the expanded travel criteria from February 5.

Travel on compassionate grounds is open to anyone who has lived in WA in the past two years and is returning to WA to “permanently reside” or who has “direct legitimate family connections”.
