Jason Nguyen hauled a kayak into his backyard as the Georges River continued to swell metres from his Chipping Norton home on Wednesday night.

"I got it out in case we needed to evacuate," Mr Nguyen said on Thursday.

Residents in parts of Sydney's south-west were asked to evacuate on Wednesday due to concerns major flooding along the Georges River would create dangerous conditions around Liverpool and Milperra.

Locals said the floodwaters peaked about midnight. Murky water still blocked parts of Newbridge Road, but was receding on Thursday afternoon.

Mr Nguyen said the water came halfway up his driveway overnight.

“It wasn’t as bad as I thought. We started putting everything in the house up on milk crates. A couple of the neighbours were going up and down the street in a tinnie.”

He said the location of his riverfront house was “good and bad at the same time”.

“It was a bit stressful last night because we were contemplating whether or not to evacuate. Our neighbours were staying, so we decided to stay as well. If they’d left, we would have gone too.”

Bernie King, who has lived in the suburb for 65 years, said he felt “a bit weary from it all”.

Anthony Lippis said the water reached “belly-button height” in his front yard but “we were expecting it to be worse”.

He has witnessed five floods in the area in the past 12 years.

“It’s really frustrating. The garage is full of high-performance engine equipment, and every time there’s flooding we have to move it all upstairs.

“You don’t mind doing it once or twice, but it’s just getting beyond a joke when it’s happening once a year.”

In nearby Lansvale, Paul Huynh was hosing dirt and debris from his driveway. Floodwaters from nearby Prospect Creek, which flows off the Georges River, gushed towards his house, peaking about midnight. The force of the rising water buckled one of his garage doors, and his steel fence.

“We had the same thing happen last year, so this year we were prepared.”
