Sydney’s Lance Franklin has become the sixth man to kick 1,000 career goals in VFL/AFL football.

Franklin came into Friday night's game against Geelong on 996 career goals, and achieved the landmark with his fourth major in the fourth quarter at the SCG.

Thousands of fans ran onto the SCG to celebrate with Franklin, as is tradition in the league when a major goalscoring milestone is reached.

It took some time for Franklin to leave the field as he was mobbed by a massive bay of fans.

"It was nice to get it done, it's been playing on my mind a little bit," Franklin told the Seven Network.

"The one [goal] last week was disappointing and to bounce back and get it tonight was good.

"Been playing for 18 years and a lot of hard work to get there but I wouldn't be able to get there without having great teammates around me to provide those assists.

"It was an amazing moment and something I will cherish forever."

Franklin, who was drafted by Hawthorn in 2004, kicked 580 goals in 182 games for the Hawks before joining Sydney for its 2014 season.

The 35-year-old became the first man to reach the 1,000-goal mark in 26 years, after Geelong’s Gary Ablett Sr did it in 1996.

Franklin joins Ablett, Geelong’s Doug Wade, Hawthorn’s Jason Dunstall, Collingwood’s Gordon Coventry and St Kilda and Sydney's Tony Lockett in this exclusive club.

After a lengthy delay as players and fans vacated the ground, the game eventually resumed and Sydney completed an impressive 30-point win.

Franklin started the match with 996 goals to his name, but he edged closer to the mark by nailing a set-shot from the pocket just before quarter-time.

He had a quiet second term before being handed a soft free kick midway through the third quarter that he converted from about 20m out.

Franklin's third was a powerful kick from 50m out directly in front, raising his hands in delight to the crowd after the ball sailed through.

The 1000th goal came late in the last quarter as he put through a set shot after being set-up by young gun Chad Warner.
