Nick Kyrgios has been fined $47,000 for his behaviour during a fourth-round loss to Jannik Sinner at the Miami Open.
- Kyrgios received a point penalty for telling a friend in the crowd he could do a better job officiating
- He then received a game penalty for yelling at the chair umpire and smashing his racquet
- The Australia was also fined $25,000 after his loss to Rafael Nadal at Indian Wells
After repeatedly berating umpire Carlos Bernardes for failing to control the crowd on Tuesday (local time), Kyrgios received a point penalty in the first set tiebreak for telling a friend in the stands he could do a better job officiating.
The Australian wildcard then received a game penalty — putting Italian Sinner up a break at the start of the second set — after repeatedly yelling "what is unsportsmanlike?" to Bernardes.
Kyrgios then walked to his bench, where he repeatedly whacked his racquet against the court.
The ATP said Kyrgios was fined $7,000 for audible obscenity, $13,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $27,000 for verbal abuse.
Asked after the match about his behaviour, Kyrgios defended his character while railing against the umpire.
"He's not even going to get a slap on the wrist for his dreadful umpiring performance today," Kyrgios said.
"Like, he was horrendous."
The incident followed a similar outburst at Indian Wells earlier this month, in which Kyrgios lost in the quarter-final to Rafael Nadal.
He responded by smashing his racquet into the ground. The racquet then bounced up and almost hit a ball boy.
Kyrgios apologised after the match and was fined $33,000.
