Scottish Premier League giants Rangers have withdrawn from their tour of Australia, killing off the prospect of Sydney hosting the first-ever Old Firm match played outside of Scotland.

The Rangers were initially scheduled to face the Western Sydney Wanderers in November before a blockbuster clash with arch-rivals Celtic.

But the Ibrox club cancelled the trip following a dispute with the tour promoters.

"Rangers can confirm the club will not be participating in the Sydney Super Cup in November 2022," the club said in a statement.

"After it became clear the tournament organisers were unwilling to fulfil their commitments to Rangers, we have, with immediate effect, terminated the club's agreement with the organisers."

Fans from both side of Glasgow had voiced their displeasure at the prospect of the Old Firm match being played outside Scotland.

Rangers' recent 2-1 win over Dundee was marred by fans throwing tennis balls and toilet paper on the pitch in protest.

Celtic are yet to confirm or deny if they will still come to Australia.

Ange Postecoglu's side were scheduled to face Sydney FC in the lead-up to their clash with the Rangers.
