The multi-level 18,000 square metre building will become the permanent home of the NGV’s contemporary collection.

Though they have gifted their money, and their name, to the building, the Foxes lean more towards the early colonial in their collecting.

“The [Eugene] Von Guerards and the [Russell] Drysdales and the [Frederick] McCubbins, that’s what Lindsay loves,” said Paula, speaking to this masthead after the family had received a standing ovation from the crowd assembled in the Long Room of the National Gallery of Victoria on Tuesday morning.

“I love Aboriginal art, and I’ve got a few Brett Whiteleys,” she added. “We have a John Olsen too. I had to put that in the kitchen.”

Though Paula has been involved in the NGV for about 20 years, the Fox children share her love of art and the donation has been made on behalf of the entire family.

Ellwood said he had been in discussion with the Foxes about the possibility of a significant donation and concomitant naming rights for about 12 months before the deal was finally agreed.

Lindsay downplayed the suggestion that securing naming rights on the gallery was a bid to ensure his legacy.

“I’ve got my name on, like, 5000 trucks,” he said. “I think you’ve got to look at this gift in the light of my family.

“My family are supporting their mother. We are supporting the community of which we are members. The rest takes care of itself.

“We’re in a position where we can help do something for Victoria, which has been so good to us,” he added. “We’re a family that enjoys giving. You never go broke by giving.”
