WA Health has reported the death of a teenager with COVID-19 as the state recorded 6085 new cases on Saturday.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Western Australia has risen to 44,955, with 239 people in hospital and eight in ICU.

Two historical deaths of men in their 70s and 80s were also reported by the department in Sunday’s update.

The news came as COVID hit WA Premier Mark McGowan’s family, hospitalising his son and leaving McGowan in isolation for a week after he also contracted the virus.

McGowan’s son was released from hospital on Saturday, and Tourism Minister Roger Cook said the Premier had chaired a committee meeting remotely, although “you can tell he’s got the disease, but he’s very strong”.

Cook said the rise in cases was not a surprise.

“Everyone’s been on holiday with their families, mixing in the community a lot more in this school holiday period than you’d usually expect,” he said.

“So the slight uptick in cases is not surprising.”
