Total eclipse from the moon
Australia’s deep space tracking station at Tidbinbilla, near Canberra, received what promises to be the colour photograph of the century. It was a total eclipse of the sun by the earth seen from the moon by the United States satellite Surveyor Three. Scientists hope it will show the glowing ring of the earth’s atmosphere against the deep red of the sun’s corona. This was the reverse of what thousands of Sydney people saw for the first time in four years, a total eclipse of the moon.

Death of a cosmonaut
The Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov was killed when his spaceship, Soyuz 1, crashed to earth while landing. After a successful re-entry, usually the most dangerous part of the flight, the straps of the spaceship’s parachute became entangled four miles above the earth, sending the capsule hurtling out of control. Colonel Komarov, 40, became the first known person to have died on a space flight and was one of the oldest spacemen.

Casanovas of the world unite
Rome: Casanovas of the world will unite at an Adriatic seaside resort next month to help each other and discuss the problems of having the same name as the 18th century Venetian seducer Giacomo Casanova. They will study the origins and history of the name and found scholarships for the children of needy Casanovas. No descendants of the most famous Casanova, who lived 1725-98, will be at the meeting as he never married and had no offspring.
