Tom Uglys Bridge opens
The steel bridge across George’s River and Tom Uglys Point was opened for traffic yesterday, but the official opening will not take place until Saturday, May 11. The bridge will supplant the old steam punt across the river. Tolls have been imposed on the bridge, and the first car to cross the bridge yesterday afternoon was driven by the president of Sutherland shire, Councillor A.J. Hands.

New speed record
“Malcolm Campbell broke the world’s five miles and five kilometres records at Verneuk Pan [South Africa]. His average speed over five miles was 212 miles an hour, beating his previous record by 72 miles an hour. He said, ‘The mixture was too weak this time for the intense cold. No one has ever raced at this altitude before. The engine became very hot, and I had to use both hands to change gear’.”

Wombat at Diggers’ ball
“During the week a wombat was captured at Cox’s Gap, near Denman,” the Herald reported. The wombat was captured by Mr Archie Mitchell. “It had been seen on several occasions. It was brought to town and placed in crate where it was put on view at the Diggers’ poppy ball on Wednesday night, and a small charge was made to see it, the amount going to swell the funds of the dance.”
