Paramedic Kevin Morgan said the crash is believed to have been caused by a head-on collision between two of the cars, before the other was unable to avoid the carnage.

He indicated there were hazardous driving conditions.

“The road was wet and there was a little bit of fog around at the time when we arrived at the scene,” Morgan said.

He said the scene was “quite confronting, certainly given the amount of people trapped in the vehicles”.

Horror morning

Police have also confirmed the death of a 24-year-old Mackay man after he collided with a car while riding his motorbike at a Racecourse intersection about 5am on Sunday.

Within the hour, a 27-year-old Sarina man was found dead on a road.

It’s believed he was struck while walking on the Sarina Beach Road by a vehicle which left the scene.

Police have called for witnesses of all incidents to come forward.
