Daniel Ricciardo says he is hoping for more luck in the Miami Grand Prix after a disappointing qualifying session.

Despite looking competitive through the first qualifying session, Ricciardo had a shocker in the second.

He could only manage 14th fastest, blaming issues in the garage before he went out for his flying lap.

The McLaren driver said his lap was compromised because of the delay.

His teammate Lando Norris managed to make it into the third session, qualifying eighth for the race on Monday morning Australian time.

"We'll hopefully get a bit better run [in the race], with a bit more fortune going our way and keep it going in a good way," Ricciardo said.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will start on pole, with teammate Carlos Sainz starting alongside him in second.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez will start third and fourth respectively.

After a dominant victory last time out in Italy, Verstappen will try to close the gap with drivers' championship leader Leclerc.

Verstappen was a chance of pole in Miami but made a mistake on his flying lap which took him out of contention.

The Dutchman said he felt confident heading into the race, despite starting behind both Ferrari drivers.

"I think we have a good chance [in the race] as we have a good top speed and the car is handling quite well, so I'm looking forward to it," he said.

Leclerc told media after qualifying he expected a strong challenge from Verstappen and Perez.

"I feel like they are going to be very strong," he said.

"It will be more competitive and it will be very tight."
