Yup, I feel the same.
What a great time to be alive in Australia! So many interesting happenings, so many changes afoot, such a swerve of verve – Clicquot! – in the air. A case in point is the news that has it that the NFL is looking to hold a game in these parts in 2024, likely between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Los Angeles Rams.
In this context, “Australia” is not just “Australia” to them but – and I am not making this up – one of the “international home marketing areas” that each team in the NFL is assigned, whereby they are expected to beat the drum to bring the mob in, watch their broadcasts, buy their merchandise, fill their coffers.
According to a report in the Tele, “the NFL is keen to build its following in Australia, naming it one of three ‘key emerging markets’ alongside New Zealand and Ghana.”
Oh, the joy!
Just imagine. Little ol’ us, named by the mighty NFL, as one of the top three plums to be picked, along with the Ghanaians and Kiwis.
“On Wednesday,” the report ran, “the Eagles were granted permission to enter New Zealand and Ghana as well as Australia, while the Rams will now extend their presence to New Zealand.
“We’ve seen great momentum since teams began entering their markets earlier this year,” NFL executive vice-president of club business and league events Peter O’Reilly enthused.
