Unlike many electronic acts, it’s nice to get an idea of what Dubber and Stuart are actually doing on stage: synth lines correspond to the former’s movements on a variety of keyboard-type instruments, while the latter hits various pads with drumsticks and his fingers to visibly bring the beats.
There’s also a fun sequence later in the show when the pair leave their stations with portable versions of their preferred instruments hung around their necks and come to the front of the stage to show off their skills.
The vocals largely come from samples, save guest singer Andie providing a sole, welcome alternative focal point for their recent collaboration Promises, but that’s not too troubling.
For on the whole, with their dazzling lights and entrancing animations, too, Hermitude present a thoroughly engaging audiovisual journey through dance music – from hip-hop to house, via drum and bass, techno and more. It’s good to have them back.
