Infrastructure Minister Catherine King, representing Agriculture Minister Murray Watt, says the government is taking foot and mouth disease "very, very seriously".

"We have introduced the toughest biosecurity measures ever undertaken in Australia," she said."

"It has been detected in over 70 countries but an immediate and pressing concern is the outbreak out of control in Indonesia.

"The government is taking a two-pronged approach by strengthening measures at our border but also working with our partners, particularly Indonesia, to prevent an outbreak coming here to the shores."

King says an additional $14 million has been committed to strengthen Australia's foot and mouth disease prevention measures.
