Gold Coast Suns’ forward Izak Rankine has told the club he is leaving and wants a trade home to South Australia.
Rankine, who enjoyed a strong 2022 season with 29 goals, told the Suns on Tuesday he was keen for a deal to be done with the Adelaide Crows, who have offered the slick small forward a deal industry sources say is for five years and worth $800,000 a season.
Suns player talent and strategy boss Craig Cameron said he was disappointed with Rankine’s decision, the club having worked hard to already retain fellow young stars Jack Lukosius, Ben King and Ben Ainsworth.
“We have created a football club where our players and staff are committed to success, so we’re disappointed with his decision,” Cameron said.
“We’ve provided an environment and support network around Izak since he was drafted to help him play his best football and it’s disappointing that journey won’t continue.”
Cameron said the Suns, who industry sources say offered Rankine more than $600,000 a season, would seek the best deal possible for the club. The Suns could ask for the Crows’ pick No.5 and a second-round selection.
Rankine, 22, was taken with the third pick of the 2018 national draft, booting 57 goals in 48 games.
He has been an integral player in the Suns’ rise, the team having won an equal club record 10 games this season, while remaining in finals calculations for much of the campaign. The improved form led to coach Stuart Dew being given a two-year contract extension.
