Sony agreed to acquire Savage Game Studios, it said Monday, as it launches an independent mobile division within PlayStation Studios. It'll operate separately from PS5 and PS4 console game development, to develop mobile games based on PlayStation franchises.
Savage is already working on "a new unannounced AAA mobile live service action game," but Sony didn't say which franchise it's based on.
The European studio, which was established in 2020, doesn't appear to have developed any games yet, but its co-founders previously worked at Angry Birds developer Rovio and World of Tanks maker Wargaming.
We got a hint that Sony was looking at the mobile games market earlier this summer, when Backbone released a PlayStation Edition of its mobile game controller.
PlayStation has also made moves into PC gaming in recent years, with exclusives like Spider-Man, God of War 2018 and Uncharted expanding beyond its consoles.
It assured gamers that it isn't moving away from console gaming, highlighting the Nov. 9 release of God of War: Ragnarok on PS5 and PS4, as well as previous 2022 games like Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 and MLB The Show 22.
