New safety measures also take effect in the updated software. A new option in the settings lets users choose a contact to cut them off from all control over their data and location, or hit a button to remove all permissions from everyone, to help victims of abuse. There’s also an emergency reset button that stops all sharing and changes passwords.
For potential victims of state-sponsored phone hacks, such as politicians, activists and journalists, a new lockdown mode limits many aspects of the phone but also makes it much harder to breach.
iOS 16 is available for all iPhones 8 or later, and can be installed in the Settings app by going to General, and then Software Update.
