The Wests Tigers have officially released utility Jackson Hastings in a player swap with the Newcastle Knights for David Klemmer.

The Tigers confirmed Hastings’ exit on Wednesday, with the Knights signing the former Man of Steel on a new three-year deal.

In the same statement Newcastle confirmed that Klemmer had been released to join “another NRL club”, which is the Tigers, on a “multi-year deal”

“We are delighted to have Jackson secured,” Knights director of football Peter Parr said of Hastings’ addition.

“He compliments our playing roster and adds further depth to our halves, with the additional bonus of being a competent goal kicker.

“Jackson is at a stage of his career where he is coming into his prime and we believe his best years are ahead of him.”

Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe, meanwhile, said Hastings’ exit was one of a number of “tough decisions” the club would be making after finishing the 2022 season in last place.

“Not everyone will be happy with some of the decisions we make, but we do not apologise for these decisions,” he added.

“Our members and fans need to understand that every decision that is made is in the best interest of this club and changing the fortunes on the field.

“This was a good opportunity for Jackson to get a long-term deal playing in his preferred position at number seven.

“On behalf of Wests Tigers, I would like to wish Jackson the very best with his future and thank him for his efforts over the past 12 months.”

The Tigers also confirmed Klemmer’s signing on Wednesday, with the former Knights prop joining the wooden spooners on a three-year deal with a mutual option for a further season.

“I can’t wait to rip into pre-season training, and I’m really excited about what’s ahead for us,” said Klemmer.

“I know Tim (Sheens) well through our time together with the Kangaroos and there’s a lot to like about where the club is headed.

“In many ways it’s a new start for the club, and I’m delighted to be a part of it. I want to make a difference here and that includes helping some of the younger players who haven’t played a lot of first grade yet.”

COWBOYS SNARE FORMER KNIGHTS CENTRE

The North Queensland Cowboys have locked in Gehamat Shibasaki for the 2023 season, signing a one-year deal.

The 24-year-old joined Todd Payten’s side on a train-and-trial contract late in the 2022 season after he impressed the club’s coaching staff.

While Shibasaki is yet to play an NRL game with the club, his stint with the Mackay Cutters in the QLD Cup saw him record some impressive statistics.

The former Knight recorded two tries, three line-breaks, 28 tackle-breaks and a remarkable 178 running metres per game across five appearances.

“We brought Gehamat in on a train and replacement contract late last season and he impressed everyone with his professionalism, energy and enthusiasm,” Cowboys General Manager of Football Micheal Luck said in a club statement.

“Gehamat adds experience and depth to our outside back stocks. We know he will train hard and tick every box off the field, which is what Todd and his coaching staff ask of our players.

“It’s fantastic we have been able to bring a North Queenslander home and he now gets a great opportunity to add to his tally of first grade games.”

TIGERS SECURE BOOM FORWARD

The Tigers have locked up boom forward Fonua Pole with an extension that will tie him to the club until the end of the 2025 season as every NRL club confirmed their development players for 2023.

Christian Ma’anaima, Josh Feledy, Justin Matamua and Kitione Kautoga are all set to be development players for the Tigers in 2023 (scroll down to see your club’s development players).

“Wests Tigers is pleased to announce that Fonua Pole has extended his playing contract through until the end of 2025,” the club said in a statement.

“The 20-year-old forward signed a two-year deal in February this year for the 2023 and 2024 seasons and has today added a further 12 months to his stay.

“Pole joined Wests Tigers in 2021 and rapidly progressed through the club’s representative teams before making his NRL debut last season.

“The New Zealand born prop made ten consecutive appearances including his Round 16 debut against the Warriors and was subsequently named Wests Tigers Rookie of the Year.”

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe is pleased to have Pole locked in for the next three seasons.

“Fonua has worked hard to get to where he is and I’m delighted for him,” Pascoe said.

“He has progressed from our Balmain SG Ball team to Jersey Flegg, then NSW Cup and on to the NRL, so it’s a credit to Fonua and also shows that our pathways programs are working.”

Head coach Tim Sheens has welcomed the news of Pole’s contract extension.

“Fonua did well in his first season in the top grade and I look forward to watching his continued development,” Sheens said.

“He’s a good example of what can happen for young players in our system who are prepared to work hard.”

Pole is keen to make further gains in 2023.

“I was stoked to play first grade last season, it was like a dream come true,” Pole said.

“I learned so much in a short time last season and I just want to focus on getting better and better over the next few years.”

“It’s a really young squad and I think we’ve got some exciting times ahead of us, starting now.”
