A man has been killed in a helicopter crash in remote East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.

The crash happened south of the community of Ramingining at about 2:45pm yesterday, according to authorities.

NT Police said the 47-year-old pilot died at the scene.

In a statement issued this morning, Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) chief commissioner Angus Mitchell said the two-seat Robinson R22 helicopter crashed into terrain.

"The pilot and sole occupant of the helicopter was fatally injured, and the helicopter was destroyed in the accident," Mr Mitchell said.

The crash is being investigated by both the ATSB — which has deployed transport safety investigators from Perth and Canberra to the site — and NT Police.

"Over coming days ATSB investigators will survey and map the accident site and collect any relevant components for further examination and analysis at the ATSB's technical facilities tin Canberra," Mr Mitchell said.

"They will also obtain and review any recorded data, weather information, witness reports, and aircraft operator procedures and maintenance records."

The incident is the second fatal helicopter crash in Arnhem Land this year.

In February, prominent Outback Wrangler cast member Chris 'Willow' Wilson was killed in a helicopter crash in West Arnhem Land, while on a job collecting crocodile eggs.

The helicopter's pilot suffered serious injuries.
