Motorists have ended up stuck in traffic for up to three hours along Melbourne's busy West Gate Freeway, with only one lane open outbound on the bridge due to roadworks.

Drivers heading down to holiday destinations found themselves stuck on the freeway for hours yesterday as Google Maps failed to advise drivers of the congestion and road closures.

The Google Maps glitch continued this morning, with the app advising delays were only up to 30 minutes, but has since been remedied.

The app is directing drivers to use Footscray Road instead of the bridge.

Tech expert Trevor Long told 3AW he expects Google's map system was "confused" and guessing the lengthy delays were not true.

"Maybe their system is so confused by how slow the traffic is, that it's not accounting for it as being real," he told 3AW Mornings.

Four of five outbound lanes on the West Gate Bridge were shut on Boxing Day for maintenance works.

They will not reopen until 6am on January 4.

The planned roadworks, which affect a key route to popular beach destinations in western Victoria, were widely advertised in the lead-up to the holiday season.

The Department of Transport has continued to advertise the closures and works on social media.
