That was tough but last year's runner up Danielle Collins is through to the second round after surviving an injury scare.

Collins got past Russia's Anna Kalinskaya 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 and only needed one match point to take the victory but Collins was under the pump.

The American had her nerves frayed throughout the match and repeatedly shrieked in frustration and whacked her racket on the court before getting through a tough opening round.

"Anytime you are on the court for three hours you especially want to win putting that much effort in," Collins said.

"The finish, it was tough, you'd rather be lucky than good but she was good and she was lucky.

"She didn't give me any free points."

Collins suffered a knee injury in the first set but said she was feeling better at the end of the match.

"I have had a meniscus tear and a cartilage tear in this knee but I just had to play through it a bit but the physio's do a great job so thanks to them."

Collins will play either Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko or Czech Karolina Muchova in the second round.
