Two-time major champion Petra Kvitová has made an early exit from the Australian Open, going down in straights sets to unseeded Anhelina Kalinina in the second round.

As rain wreaks havoc with the Australian Open schedule, Kvitová and Kalinina were playing under the roof on John Cain Arena, with the Ukrainian triumphing 7-5, 6-4.

Czech Kvitová, who reached the Australian Open final in 2019, was seeded 15 in the women's draw, but she was outclassed by the world number 39, who is making only her second appearance at Melbourne Park.

Earlier, world number one Iga Świątek stepped up her game to restore order with a more routine second-round win.

Persistent rain has meant there has been no play on the outside courts so far on Wednesday, while a host of matches need to be finished after being suspended last night.

The rain did not affect Świątek, however, as the world number one advanced to the last 32 with a resounding 6-2, 6-3 victory over Colombian Camila Osorio under the closed roof on Rod Laver Arena.

Świątek had to scrap her way back from a service break in the second set of her unconvincing tournament opener against Jule Niemeier on Monday night.
