Australian rock icon Jimmy Barnes has shared an update about his health after undergoing surgery in December.

Barnes, 66, was forced to abandon his tour last year to undergo emergency back and hip surgery due to "constant and severe pain".

The Working Class Man singer posted updates to his official social media throughout his recovery — and this week said he had been given the "all clear".

"We've got 10 out of 10, and an all clear to get on the next plane. Land of Smiles here we come. The kids will look after the veggies, roses and geese. Our next phase of Physio will be in a pool by the Gulf of Siam. Luckiest man in the world right now," Barnes posted.

The next day, Barnes also posted a photo with his wife Jane Barnes at the airport.

"We're through the rigmarole of check in and customs, ready to board. Thanks for cheering me on, so much positivity has definitely helped. I'll be working on my book, writing new music between Physio work in the pool."

Barnes originally announced on November 29 he would be going under the knife, saying he had "niggling back and hip issues for years", but things had suddenly got a lot worse.

"I've been jumping off PAs and stomping around stages for nearly 50 years, but it's finally caught up with me," Barnes said last year.

"As everybody knows, it's against my religion to blow out gigs, but the doctors tell me I need an operation as soon as possible and it will really limit my movement for a few months."

Barnes, who had to cancel his gigs to recover from the surgery, is now scheduled to make his stage return in August at Queensland's Sandstone Point Hotel, followed by a performance in the Whitsundays.
