Sydney is set to sweat through another scorcher on Saturday before a cool change provides welcome relief – but the mercury is forecast to climb again next week.

The CBD reached a high of 31 degrees while Penrith hit 38 degrees on Friday. Meteorologist Neale Fraser from Bureau of Meteorology said he was expecting similar heatwave temperatures for Saturday.

“For Sydney we’re forecasting 31 for the city just due to the sea breeze that’s coming in and 28 for Bondi,” he said.

“But for Penrith, we’re going for a top of 38, while Parramatta will reach 35 and Richmond will get to 38.”

Those near the coast will likely get respite from the heatwave early on Saturday, with a breeze expected.

“If you’re right on the coast it’ll come in mid to late morning, it’s more likely to come in about 10 to 11am. At Bondi it will be earlier,” Fraser said.

The bureau expects a southerly change to arrive on Saturday about midnight, meaning Sunday temperatures will be a bit lower.

“Sunday is a cooler day, top of 27 for the city and 30 for Penrith on Sunday,” Fraser said.
