A postman has been taken to hospital in rural Queensland after being chased by a dog during his daily mail run.

It happened on Tuesday in Collinsville, a town of 1,500, about 90 kilometres inland from Bowen on the Queensland coast.

The postie was chased by a dog which Australia Post said had escaped from a nearby property.

Although the man wasn't bitten, he fell off his bike and sustained injuries.

"The Collinsville postie is now recovering after receiving treatment in hospital," a spokesperson said.

"The safety of our people is of the utmost importance and this incident is an unfortunate reminder to the community to make sure their dogs are restrained especially if they are expecting a delivery.

"Dogs are territorial by nature, so even good dogs can have a bad day."

An investigation into the matter has been launched by the Whitsunday Regional Council which confirmed it had impounded the dog involved.

"One dog has been impounded by the Council until the investigation is complete," a council spokesperson said.

"The other dog involved has been removed by its owner and Council officers have been attempting to contact that owner."

Collinsville residents were without mail for three days after the crash.

Australia Post appointed a replacement driver to clear the backlog of parcels and letters on Friday.

An Australia Post spokeswoman said more than 1,000 delivery drivers were involved in dog attacks each year.

Forty-one per cent of attacks occurred on the footpath and 22 per cent happened at the front door.

One third required an Australia Post staff member to seek medical attention or undergo surgery.
