Talk station 2GB* has snatched back its crown from FM broadcaster Kiis in the second ratings survey of 2023, while ABC Sydney suffered its fourth consecutive decline in audience share.

Overall, 2GB claimed 11.8 per cent of Sydney’s radio listenership (up from 11 per cent in the previous survey), closely followed by Kiis on 11.5 per cent (down from 11.9 per cent). ABC Sydney recorded a share of 5.5 per cent (down from 5.9 per cent).

In March, The Sydney Morning Herald revealed that the national broadcaster had established an internal advisory group – and hired external consultants – to help reverse the dramatic decline of its radio audiences in capital cities across the country.

This survey wasn’t much better for ABC’s other stations, with Radio National on 1.1 per cent (down from 1.3 per cent); NewsRadio on 1.5 per cent (down from1.8 per cent), Triple J on 4 per cent (down from 4.9 per cent) and Classic on 2.7 per cent (down from 3.3 per cent).

Triple M (on 6.1 per cent) and 2Day FM (on 5.8 per cent) enjoyed the biggest gains, each adding 1.1 percentage points to their audience share.

Smooth captured 9.7 per cent of the available audience (down from 10.3 per cent); WSFM had 9.4 per cent (up from 8.9 per cent); while Nova took a 6.6 per cent slice (down from 7 per cent).

This survey covered the period of February 5 to April 1. Audiences are measured by time slot rather than program, meaning results do not always correlate precisely with actual shows or presenters.

In the lucrative breakfast slot, Kiis’s Kyle Sandilands and Jacki O maintained their dominance with a 15.1 per cent audience share, ahead of 2GB’s Ben Fordham on 14.7 per cent, WSFM’s Jonesy & Amanda show on 10.2 per cent, Smooth’s Bogart Torelli and Ron Wilson on 7.1 per cent, and ABC Sydney’s James Valentine and Nova’s Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie program, each on 7.0 per cent.
