  • In short: Public transport fares in Victoria are rising by 40 cents per trip, or 80 cents a day
  • What's next? The changes will come in from next weekend

Daily Myki fares for travel on Victorian public transport will rise almost a dollar to $10 a day from the start of July.

The daily fare is rising from $9.20 to $10, while the single fare will go from $4.60 to $5.

It represents an 8.7 per cent increase, which is more than the inflation rate.

V/Line fares, for regional transport, will rise in line with metro prices.

As part of an election promise, the Victorian government cut the price of V/Line tickets so they were in line with metro prices, which came into effect in late March.

Under the new changes, weekend fares will also increase by 8.7 per cent. A daily weekend ticket will go from $6.70 to $7.20, and a single ticket from $3.35 to $3.60.

For those with monthly and yearly Myki passes, the daily price will rise from $5.52 to $6.

The state opposition said the hike in Myki fares would hit household budgets across Victoria.

"The fares are legislated to increase again next January," Shadow Minister for Public Transport Richard Riordan said.

"It's unfair and at a time in the middle of winter when 80 per cent of our rail lines are closed and people are having to stand in the rain and go on buses. It's simply a bad look.

"There is no doubt the Andrews government's commitment to lower fares was the shortest-lived election promise in the history of Victorian politics."

Daniel Bowen from the Public Transport Users Association said fares usually only rose on January 1.

"They've kind of sprung this on us," he told ABC Radio Melbourne.

"It's quite a big rise, it's over 8 per cent, which perhaps is to be expected, but it's still a big jump."

In a statement, a state government spokesperson said the government was aware many Victorians were dealing with cost-of-living pressures.

"That's why we're ensuring Metro and regional fares continue to be the same price into the future and we'll continue to provide a range of discounts and concessions so that the cost of travel is fair for all Victorians," the spokesperson said.

"Since the introduction of the regional fare cap, Victorians have saved millions of dollars – travelling from the regions or exploring every corner of regional Victoria."
