Glastonbury, the UK's biggest music festival, is almost over for another year.

Rebounding after the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival saw 210,000 eager fans flood through the gates over the weekend.

Headlined by some of the biggest acts in the world, including Arctic Monkeys, Guns N' Roses, Lizzo, Yusef/Cat Stevens, Lana Del Ray and Elton John, the weekend also provided its share of surprises.

Here's what you missed.

Elton John's last UK Gig

Rumours were flying thick and fast for Elton John's festival-closing Glastonbury set which had also been touted as his last live performance in the UK.

For weeks, fans have been confident that he would pull everyone from Britney Spears to Dua Lipa onstage to bid farewell.

But while his Sunday night set was by all accounts an amazing performance, the special guests fell a bit flat.

Elton first brought out The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers to join him on Tiny Dancer before welcoming singer Rina Sawayama for Don't Go Breaking My Heart.

The veteran pop star also performed with Jacob Lusk of Gabriels, The London Community Gospel Choir and TikTok star Stephen Sanchez.

Finally, Elton also took the opportunity to dedicate a song to his friend, George Michael on what would have been the singer’s 60th birthday.

Crowd helps Lewis Capaldi finish

Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi has been remarkably candid about how his anxiety and Tourette's syndrome affected his ability to perform live.

Despite cancelling three weeks of shows to "rest and recover" for his Glastonbury set, Capaldi struggled to get through his Saturday afternoon performance.

Luckily tens of thousands of fans were there to help Capaldi sing in the most heart-warming of displays.

By the end of the set, Capaldi indicated that it might be a while before  he's back on stage again.

"I feel like I'll be taking another wee break over the next couple of weeks. So you probably won't see much of me for the rest of the year, maybe even," he said.

"But when I do come back and when I do see you, I hope you're still up for watching us."

Dave Grohl's Very Busy Weekend

After Dave Grohl got papped taking the train to Glastonbury (classic Dave Grohl behaviour), it was revealed that mystery headliner The Churnups were actually the Foo Fighters!

The surprise set marks the first time the band has graced a Glastonbury stage since 2017 and marks one of the first live performances since the passing of drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022.

But Grohl wasn't content with just his own performing slot, he raced all over the festival popping up during The Pretenders' set to perform drums on I'll Stand By You.

He then went on to make a THIRD appearance, shredding guitar on Paradise City during Guns N' Roses headlining slot.

Cate Blanchett can DANCE

As one of the biggest music festivals in the world, it's customary for massive stars to just randomly turn up during Glasto sets.

And, in 2023, none were more random and delightful than Aussie Cate Blanchett's starring roll during US tech pop duo Sparks' set.

Decked out in a banana yellow suit, Blanchett jumped and flailed wildly while recreating her dance routine from the band's music for The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte.

She wasn't the only Oscar winner to join in the fun over the weekend, Tilda Swinton popped up during composer Max Richter's set to read passages from the duo's 2004 anti-war protest album The Blue Notebook.

Rina Sawayama shades Matty Healy

Back in February, The 1975 frontman Matty Healy made some less-than-appealing comments on a podcast hosted by comedian Adam Friedland.

Along with the hosts, Healy mocked the imagined accent of rapper Ice Spice and incorrectly identified her cultural heritage. Healy also said he watched racially charged pornography, referring to a scene which "brutalised" women.

Healy's comments were widely criticised by the industry and fans at the time.

Well, alt-pop singer Rina Sawayama took her Saturday night Glasto set to call out Healy's behaviour.

While introducing her song STFU! Sawayama said, "I wrote this next song because I was sick and tired of microaggressions. So, tonight, this song goes out to a white man who watches [pornography series] Ghetto Gaggers and mocks Asian people on a podcast. He also owns my masters. I've had enough."

Sawayama is signed to Dirty Hit, which also releases the 1975's music. Healy served as a director of the label from December 2018 to April 2023.

No-one puts Lana in the corner

With dozens and dozens of acts per day, Glastonbury is extremely strict with sticking to set times.

Lana Del Ray found this out the hard way when, after coming on half an hour late, her power was cut before her set finished in an attempt to move her on.

The singer wasn't going down without a fight however, leading her adoring audience through an acapella sing-a-long of her debut single Video Games before disappearing from stage.

Rick Astley covers everyone

Glastonbury 2023 was the year of the cover. Lizzo took on Coldplay, rapper Aitch brought out Wonderwall.

But Rick Astley celebrated his Glastonbury slot by covering just about everyone else.

First it was Chic's Good Times, then he mashed up Harry Styles' mega-hit As It Was with A-Ha's Take On Me.

Finally, he added a little bit of Aussie flavour, stepping behind the drum kit to cover AC/DC's Highway to Hell.

And don't worry, he made sure to treat the crowd to a good and thorough Rickrolling, aka his defining hit Never Gonna Give You Up.
