There may be a frenzy over tickets for Taylor Swift, but for smaller fish in the music scene, the post-pandemic landscape is tough.

While Swift could reportedly make $35 million from her current Australian tour, many other very talented acts are struggling just to break even.

Take up-and-coming Perth band Joan & The Giants, for example, who embarked on their first headline tour of the east coast this week.

The alternative pop band are on an upwards trajectory and have just been chosen to perform at BIGSOUND, a prestigious event on the Australian music industry calendar.

They have also just taken out several WA music awards, and have the sort of local following where loyal fans can belt out the lyrics to their songs at gigs.

But with rising costs for travel, freight, car hire and accommodation, Joan & The Giants' current tour of New South Wales and Victoria will be costly.

Lead singer Grace Newton-Wordsworth, who wears several hats in this independent, self-managed outfit, has already done the sums.

"I think we will probably lose a couple of grand. Maybe $2,000 to $4,000," she said.

"I think it's fairly accepted, especially for the first few trips of going over east, a lot of bands are making a loss from WA, and at the same time it's all working towards the bigger goal of eventually ... not making a loss."

At which point she burst into laughter, undaunted by the challenge and excited about the future.

Chasing the dream

The 26-year-old started the band with her partner, Aaron Birch, in 2019.

The couple are passionate about the value of their music and believe investing what would otherwise be their house deposit in their craft will be worth it in the end.

"We're starting at the beginning of our east coast journey and it's expensive but at the same time, it's a dream that we're willing to pursue," Grace said.

Connection through music is a key motivation for the band.
