Colombia players smile while South Korean players talk in the foreground at the Women's World Cup.
(ABC News: Brendan Esposito)

Colombia hangs on to its 2-0 half-time lead and opens its Women's World Cup account with a win for the first time.

The match at the Sydney Football Stadium was the final tournament opener, with Korea, ranked 17th, no doubt disappointed to go down to the 25th-ranked South Americans.

South Korea was pretty thoroughly outplayed in that one, barely threatening aside from a couple of chances at the end of each half.

Meanwhile, Colombia's goals came from a penalty for handball and a goalkeeper blunder, so they will have to improve their execution if they're to match it with a high-flying German side on Sunday.
