England delivered their best performance of the World Cup as Denmark booked a knockout stage showdown with the Matildas.

The Lionesses were at their best as Lauren James shone again with two fine goals as England put in their best performance of the Women's World Cup so far to sweep aside China 6-1 on Tuesday and march into the last 16 as Group D winners.

Alessia Russo gave the European champions the perfect start with a goal in the fourth minute and Lauren Hemp and James added two more to give England a comfortable lead at the break at Hindmarsh Stadium.

James grabbed her third goal of the tournament after halftime before Chloe Kelly and Rachel Daly also found the net to give England an emphatic victory as they head off to Brisbane to play Nigeria on Monday for a place in the quarter-finals.

It was a record World Cup defeat for Asian champions and 1995 semi-finalists China, who exit in the group stage for the first time in eight appearances at the global showpiece.

Denmark finished second in the group with a 2-0 victory over Haiti and will play the Matildas in Sydney on Monday night.

Denmark captain Pernille Harder converted a first-half penalty to register her maiden Women's World Cup goal before substitute Sanne Troelsgaard sealed the result in stoppage time.

Earlier The Netherlands dominated Vietnam 7-0 and the USA and Portugal played out a scoreless draw.

Look back on how Tuesday's matches unfolded below.

Now we know:

  • England will be playing Nigeria in Brisbane on Monday.
  • The Matildas will be playing Denmark in Sydney, also on Monday.

That's it from me

Another action packed day - I could count the goals but it's too late for maths at this point. There were a lot. Let's say 20.

The big takeaways for me:

  • Denmark book a date with the Matildas
  • England are the real deal
  • Still question marks over the US

Will see you back here tomorrow for another big day.

FULL-TIME: China 1 - 6 England

Bernadette Clarke: "Some very happy English fans here tonight singing 'It’s coming home'."

Safe to say the Lionesses roared tonight, and showed they are serious contenders for the title, if there were any doubts. Most impressive of all, they did it without Keira Walsh. A bit scary really.

Lauren James in particular was absolutely phenomenal. One of the great World Cup performances, two goals, both amazing, and three assists.

FULL-TIME: Haiti 0 - 2 Denmark

GOAL Denmark!

That's that. Denmark lead Haiti 2-0 and have locked up second place in the group.

Nielsen fires it low across the keeper and into the far corner.

We're into added time in both games

11 minutes to be played in both matches.

84' Rachel Daly smashes it in and it's 6 for England

Loose defending from China as England keep poking it into the box until it falls to someone in space. The finish was brilliant though.

Oh no, another VAR check. Not this time, the goal stands.

Don't say it don't say it don't say it....

Lauren James goes off - all rise for Lauren James

What a performance from Lauren James. Two spectacular goals and three assists. Hope you had her in your fantasy team.

77' Chloe Kelly pounces on an error and makes it 5 for England

Lauren James launches a pass from deep like a golf chip, the perfect weighting and backspin are enough to put doubt into the mind of goalkeeper Zhu Yo and she misjudges. Kelly runs straight past her and dabs it into the empty net.

Triple change for England

They just need to ride this one out now.

66' Lauren James scores another stunner. 4-1 England

Jess Carter curls in a cross from the right and Lauren James cruises in at the back post and volleys home with supreme control.

Gorgeous stuff.

61' China on the attack again

They have the wind in their sales now.

Lina Yang has a pop from distance and it flies over.

57' Wang Shuang pulls a goal back for China from the penalty spot!

China make it 3-1.

That's the first goal England have conceded at this tournament.

England will hope it's just a blip in this game - and nothing to suggest it's not.

53' Wu Cheng Shu forces a sharp save from Earps!

It's a long range effort but the England keeper is forced to dive low to her right to tip it around the corner.

And from the resulting corner China almost bundle it over the line!

And VAR is looking at this! Potential hand ball from Lucy Bronze. I think that's going to be a penalty.

PENALTY CHINA!

54' Denmark with a shot on target

A fairly weak one from Madsen, to be honest, but nice build up play down the left.

Both matches are back underway

HALF-TIME: China 0 - 3 England

After a couple of OK performances, the Lionesses are finally starting to roar.

They have not looked for one second like they're not winning this match against China, who have largely had to watch England pass circles around them.

So it's looking like England and Australia are avoiding each other for now.

If England don't fall in a heap after the break, they will play Nigeria in Brisbane on Monday.

HALF-TIME: Haiti 0 - 1 Denmark

Haiti have had their moments in this one, but it's largely been Denmark attacking in waves. They could be further in front.

For now, the Danes will be very happy with this result, as it puts them through as well.

45+5' GOLAZO LAUREN JAMES - but it's offside

Woof!!

She casually drifts onto a second phase ball from a corner and sends it curling into the far corner with her left boot.

But wait ... the ref is checking for offside.

Oh no, Lucy Bronze was offside when she assisted the goal.

What. A. Shame.

I wasn't entirely sure whether the ball to Bronze came off a Chinese player, which you'd think would rule her onside?

We're getting into the finer nuances of the rule here.

41' GOAL LAUREN JAMES

Superbly worked free kick, they made it look easy.

It's just slid to the feet of James who guides it into the net through a thicket of bodies.

England are cruising.
