Australia's Alex de Minaur has secured a breakthrough 6-1, 6-3 victory over Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Toronto to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 final.

De Minaur, who was fresh off an upset win over second seed and former world number one Daniil Medvedev, delivered a simple game plan in blustery conditions against Davidovich Fokina.

The Spaniard struggled to find any sort of rhythm throughout the 78-minute match.

"I just told myself to stay positive, keep competing no matter what and you never know what's going to happen," de Minaur said after the match.

"So I thought I had a great mindset today … I didn't play the best of tennis but I did what needed to be done today in these conditions."

De Minaur won his seventh ATP Tour title in Acapulco this year and reached the final in Los Cabos last week.

The world number 18 is set to rise to at least a career-best 14th in the rankings next week and could wind up on the cusp of the top 10 if he wins the Toronto title.

Up next for de Minaur, who until this week had never reached the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 event, will be a clash with Italy's seventh seed Jannik Sinner, who defeated 12th-seeded American Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-4.
