Tim Sheens will finish up as Wests Tigers NRL coach at the end of the season, allowing Benji Marshall to take the reins at the struggling club next year.

The Tigers released a statement on Wednesday afternoon saying the club and Sheens had "mutually agreed to part ways".

Sheens was appointed head coach late last year on the proviso he would groom Marshall as his successor for 2025, but the plan has been brought forward by 12 months.

The Tigers have failed to make an impact during Sheens's second stint as as their head coach, having won only three matches so far this year to hold down bottom spot on the ladder.

They are widely tipped to claim a second-straight wooden spoon.

Despite the Tigers' poor record in 2023, Sheens said the club was making progress.

"I came back with a focus on creating stronger pathways and development programs," he said in a Tigers statement.

"I am proud of the work accomplished by all involved in the pathways system and of the emerging local talent, in both the men's and women’s competitions."

Sheens said he was "extremely proud" of his role in preparing Marshall to take over as head coach.

Marshall, who Sheens coached when the Tigers won the 2005 premiership, said he was "humbled" by his appointment.

"To be the head coach of Wests Tigers has been a long-held dream of mine since retiring from playing," he said.

"I am very grateful for the opportunity to take on the role and I am indebted to Tim for all that he has taught me, both as a player and as an assistant coach.

"I know that I am ready to take on the role with all the support that the club has offered."

Earlier on Wednesday, Tigers chair Lee Hagipantelis said Sheens had taken the decision of his own volition, with the club approached last week by the coach's manager, Chris Orr, to discuss a possible restructuring.

"It was following that outreach that these conversations were undertaken, all with Tim's engagement and blessing," Hagipantelis said.
