St George Illawarra NRL star Junior Amone was not present at the time of an alleged rooftop hammer assault in September, his defence has argued in Wollongong Local Court.

The Dragon's five-eighth on Friday faced court with his father, Talatau Amone, charged with allegedly attacking two tradesmen.

The two workers were allegedly attacked by the duo while working on a rooftop across the road from the family's Warrawong home in September.

It was alleged Junior Amone chased one of the men on the roof armed with a hammer before the tradesman fell from the roof, while Mr Amone senior allegedly damaged a car and threatened another man.

The father and son were supported by a group of 10 people, as the court was shown several body-worn videos played as evidence and the victims were cross-examined.

Footage tendered to the court showed a victim speaking with a police officer after the incident, claiming they had broken their ribs and hip

In closing submissions, the prosecution argued Junior Amone's presence could be confirmed by an officer who arrived first on the scene, who described seeing a man on the roof matching the football player's appearance, including a specific tattoo and a "tall, athletic" build.

Mistaken identity, defence argues

The defence has argued mistaken identity, claiming 21-year-old Junior Amone was not present at the time of the alleged incident.

During cross-examination, John Korn for the defence suggested Junior Amone had been incorrectly identified by a media article published a day after the incident, which influenced the man's recollection.

The defence argued police were "uninterested" in confirming the correct identity of the suspect, describing an offer of an ID parade as a "sham".

Mr Korn said Junior Amone was not adequately offered access to a lawyer by police, despite requesting one before agreeing to a line-up, which the police officer — who was summoned to the witness box — described as "an oversight".

He suggested in court that the "experienced" police officer had deliberately offered the ID despite "knowing the witnesses had come up with their own conclusion".

During closing submissions, Mr Korn suggested that the court reject any evidence given by the victims, claiming they had relied solely on a news article to identify Junior Amone.

"There is a prejudice caused from looking at one photo," he said.

He said the evidence brought before the court from the victims was "unimpressive".

"They were not here to tell the truth, their evidence was retracted and denied, they contradicted themselves," Mr Korn said.

The court heard CCTV footage matched with Junior Amone's clothing as well as his particular moustache.

Victims questioned

Mr Korn questioned if one of the alleged victims was a "member of an outdoor motorcycle gang".

He asked him in court if he had threatened to "send 20 bikies" through the house of Mr Amone senior.

The prosecutor argued this was irrelevant to the case.

It was revealed in court that the two alleged victims lived together, bringing rise to an evidence issue.

"Witnesses should not be in a position where they come together and discuss, because it might affect their recollection," Mr Korn said.

"They can fortify each other's conclusions."

Magistrate Gabriel Flemming said there may have been an issue of "contamination influence", caused by the two victims living together.

Junior Amone still playing rugby

Speaking with media outside court, Junior Amone's lawyer Elias Tabchouri maintained he was not the man on the roof with the hammer.

"The evidence was dealt with by her honour and she will come to a resolution when she considers all evidence," she said.

The Dragons will face Melbourne Storm on Saturday but it is unlikely Junior Amone will feature.

"He's still playing and will continue to play until the decision comes down," Mr Tabchouri said.

"Any kind of allegation is damaging to anyone's reputation and it is difficult for anyone to deal with."
