Cronulla's inaugural NRLW season is back on track with their best victory to date — a 40-12 thrashing of North Queensland.

Sitting ninth on the ladder as the regular season passed its halfway point, the Sharks could ill-afford a repeat of last week's big loss to the Sydney Roosters when they travelled to Townsville on Saturday.

But North Queensland's defensive woes opened the door for the Sharks to score more first-half points than any side this season — 24 — and then coast their way to a big win.

In the last minute of the game, the Sharks twice came within inches of breaking the record for most points in an NRLW game, which currently sits at 40.

But debutant winger Georgia Ravics stepped into touch as she attempted to spin out of a tackle for a try on the right, and Vanessa Foliaki was chased down by the cover defence in the final seconds.

Cronulla snapped a three-game losing streak and, with first-choice fullback Jada Taylor finally back from her ankle injury, are near full strength as they prepare a charge to the finals.

Making matters worse for the Cowboys, winger Autumn-Rain Stephens-Daly suffered a suspected injury to her right knee when she fell awkwardly in a tackle midway through the second half.

Cronulla picked holes in the Cowboys' poor goal-line defence; they enjoyed only eight tackles in North Queensland's red zone in the first half but had four tries to show for it.

The first of those came only 90 seconds into the match, when prop Ellie Johnston crashed over from close range.

Emma Tonegato moved back to five-eighth to accommodate Taylor's return and had the Sharks' second try when she skipped through Tahlulah Tillett and Bree Chester.

The Cowboys did well to stem the bleeding either side of halftime before rising star Taylor extended the lead with her first NRLW try in the 42nd minute.

She dummied and stepping past Cowboys halfback Kirra Dibb before belting 20 metres to the tryline.

Late four-pointers to hooker Quincy Dodd and Sereana Naitokatoka blew the scoreline out.
