You might say Hana Burzalová walked right into this.

As the Slovakian race walker crossed the finish line of the women's 35-kilometre race at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Burzalová was greeted by her partner, Dominik Černý.

Černý, who had finished the men's 35km walk about an hour earlier, dropped to one knee and asked Burzalová to marry him.

The answer?

Burzalová, whose jaw dropped as she crossed the line, was overcome with emotion before saying yes.

"Why not in Budapest?" Černý said afterwards.

"We have been together for almost one Olympic cycle, almost four years, so I think it was the right time.

"It was a top-secret thing that nobody knew."

Even as she approached the line and saw Černý waiting on his knee, Burzalová made sure to stop her watch before he popped the question.

Burzalová made sure to stop her watch before saying yes to Černý's marriage proposal.

She finished in her season-best time of three hours, two minutes and 47 seconds to claim 28th place.

Earlier, Černý had clocked 2:32:56, which is his personal best and was good enough for a 19th-placed finish.

After he slipped the ring on Burzalova's finger, Černý scooped her up and carried her off the course.

He said there were no immediate plans for the couple's next big walk — down the aisle.
